Over the years, I've ended up with numerous vintage neckties found in auction box lots and other sources. I've been compiling creative ideas on a Pinterest board dedicated to Necktie Crafts, but most of the projects require sewing. This wreath is a no-sew project that can be made in just an hour or two. Could this be a Father's Day gift? Or how about a way of preserving some old ties of grandpa's? It beats keeping them in a box in the attic or basement, and/or saves you the guilt of throwing them out.....
Materials and Tools Needed:
Assorted neckties
Wreath form (foam or straw)
Hot glue
Scissors
Pins
Vintage buttons
Jute or household string for hanging
Directions:
To get started, select your ties. I selected ties in one color family, but a multicolor tie wreath would be nice too:
Cut your ties long enough to wrap around the wreath form once and extend a few inches outward. If you leave too much length extending out from the wreath, the pieces will be floppy and won't look good. You will get the hang of it as you work with your materials. Each tie can yield two pieces, cutting one piece from each end:
It's important that the ties overlap each other so that the wreath form doesn't show. Use pins to keep them in place before you start gluing:
Keep working your way around the wreath form using pins until you like the way everything looks:
Once you have everything arranged the way you like it, remove the pins on the front of the wreath and use hot glue to tack down the tie pieces:
Once you finish gluing the back, add a little loop of string and glue it down. Cover the base of the loop with a piece of fabric for a finished look:
To create an embellishment, gather some buttons. I stacked a couple buttons together and glued them to make the finishing touch for the wreath:
All done!

Very cool wreath!

This is a wonderful idea for a memory wreath of one who has passed. My father died recently. After reading this today I immediately emailed my mother asking if she would want a memory wreath made with his ties. Thank you so much for this idea.

Mitzi, you did a very nice job with that wreath! Aren't ties the hardest item to try to repurpose? They are so pretty but they really challenge people who want to recycle or upcycle. Have you ever heard of using pure silk ones to dye eggs? I have read the directions but haven't tried it.

Thanks so much for your comment, Kandie! I hope you are able to create a memory wreath with your fathers ties. My condolences on the loss of your father.

Hi Sue,
Thanks! I agree that ties are a difficult item to repurpose! Ive seen the dyed eggs, on Martha Stewart I think, but I havent tried them yet. Maybe next Easter....
As always, thank you for your comment....
